Luke 5:17-26

17 One day He was teaching; and there were some Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing. 18 And some men were carrying on a bed a man who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him. 19 But not finding any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. 20 Seeing their faith, He said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.” 21 The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?” 22 But Jesus, aware of their reasonings, answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins have been forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,”—He said to the paralytic—“I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.” 25 Immediately he got up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God. 26 They were all struck with astonishment and began glorifying God; and they were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen remarkable things today.”

A. What is it?

Receive—imitate—set an example.

2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

4 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. 6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, 7 so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8 For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. 9 For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

Being Missional

A. What is it?
Receive—imitate—set an example.
2 Thessalonians 1:11-12
11 To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power, 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

B. What are its benefits?
1. Missional frees you to live for something larger than yourself
2 Thessalonians 3:1
1 Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you,
2 Thessalonians 3:5
May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.
2 Thessalonians 2: 16-17
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, 17 comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

2. Missional saves you from false way of understanding church:
a. Church as a spiritual restaurant
b. Faith as a private, personal thing
c. Church should be like the world
d. Church retreats from the world

C. What is the evidence you are living missionally?
Four movements in the life of a missional person:
1) Movement toward God:
2) Movement toward others

3) Movement toward your resources.

Proverbs 10:
24 One gives freely, yet grows all the richer;
another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.
25 Whoever brings blessing will be enriched,
and one who waters will himself be watered.

4) Movement toward each other

1 Thessalonians 5:1-3

1 Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need
to have anything written to you. 2 For you yourselves are fully aware that
the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are
saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come
upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not
escape.
4 But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a
thief.

They couldn’t possibly miss the day of the Lord. Paul’s four reasons: it is

predicted, audible, swiftly sudden, inescapable

1. Predicted

you know (you yourselves are fully aware)
that you can’t know the exact time (day of the Lord will come like a thief in
the night

Marked special visitations of God,

In judgment on either Israel or her enemies (bitter)
In blessing/deliverance for Israel. (sweet)

Pentecost (blessing: Holy Spirit poured out) (sweet)
Final day in earth history, judgment (bitter)

1 Thessalonians 4:15 -> 1 Thess.5:2 -> 2 Thess.1:7 -> 2 Thess.2:1-2

1 Cor.15:23-24
23 But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who
are Christ’s at His coming, 24 then comes the end, when He hands over
the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all
authority and power.

2 Peter 3
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will
pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat,
and the earth and its works will be burned up.

2. audible

According to 1 Thess.4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven
with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God,

Shout:
Voice of archangel:
Trumpet of God:

This prominent old testament image converges at the second coming:

We’ll hear the voice of God, Jesus;
We’ll assemble with him;
He will take his rightful claim as Lord of the whole earth;
He will come to end our strife on earth;
He will commence a swift battle to defeat his enemies,
we will worship him as he is hailed by all king of kings

So Paul calls this the last trumpet in 1 Cor. 15:50
51Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be
changed, 52in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For
the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we
shall be changed. 53For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54When the perishable puts
on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to
pass the saying that is written:

3. swiftly sudden

4. inescapable

destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman
with child, and they will not escape.

 <itunes:summary>1 Thessalonians 5:1-3
1 Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need
to have anything written to you. 2 For you yourselves are fully aware that
the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are
saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come
upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not
escape.
4 But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a
thief.
They couldn’t possibly miss the day of the Lord. Paul’s four reasons: it is
predicted, audible, swiftly sudden, inescapable
1. Predicted
you know (you yourselves are fully aware)
that you can’t know the exact time (day of the Lord will come like a thief in
the night
Marked special visitations of God,
In judgment on either Israel or her enemies (bitter)
In blessing/deliverance for Israel. (sweet)
Pentecost (blessing: Holy Spirit poured out) (sweet)
Final day in earth history, judgment (bitter)
1 Thessalonians 4:15 -> 1 Thess.5:2 -> 2 Thess.1:7 -> 2 Thess.2:1-2
We’ll hear the voice of God, Jesus;
We’ll assemble with him;
He will take his rightful claim as Lord of the whole earth;
He will come to end our strife on earth;
4. inescapable
destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman
with child, and they will not escape.</itunes:summary>
